Founding Forward collects compelling essays submitted by students nationwide every year as part of the National Awards Program. The essay contest is open to K-12 students, with the essay topic provided by Founding Forward. Winners receive a cash prize and automatic consideration for the National Awards. Entries open September 8, 2026, and the deadline to submit is December 1, 2026.
The Middle (7-8) & High School (9-12) Divisions essay contest topic:
Analyze how the experience at Valley Forge shaped the founding principles of American citizenship. In your essay, identify at least two specific principles, rights, or responsibilities that emerged or were strengthened during the encampment, and argue why those principles remain relevant to citizens today, 250 years later.
Essays are due December 1, 2026.
The Grads K-6 Divisons essay contest topic:
Explain what you think it means to be brave, using the story of Valley Forge as your example. In your essay, describe what the soldiers faced, explain why they did not give up, and share one way you can show that same kind of courage as a citizen today.
