Honoring 2025 National Award winners, National Youth Essay winners and 2026 Spirit of America (SOA) scholarship winners. Please join us for a night of recognition with a lovely dinner and dynamic keynote speaker, John McGinness. See details below on how you can be part of this special event.
John McGinness retired as Sacramento County Sheriff in December 2010 after a distinguished 31-year career with the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department. During his tenure, he served in every service area of the department and earned numerous decorations as a veteran of many high-profile assignments.
His experience included many years on the Sheriff’s Motorcycle Detail, where he acted as a training officer and team leader. He also worked as a CSI investigator, homicide detective, and department spokesman. Rising through the ranks, he eventually commanded the Centralized Investigation Division before his appointment as Undersheriff in March 2001. He held that position until his election as Sheriff in 2006.
McGinness holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Criminal Justice with a minor in Public Administration, as well as a Master of Science degree in Emergency Services Administration, both from California State University, Long Beach. He is also a graduate of the prestigious West Point Leadership Institute.
In addition, he serves as an Adjunct Professor of Criminal Justice, Communications, Leadership, and Professional Studies at California State University.
In 2007, Governor Schwarzenegger appointed him to the POST Commission. Today, McGinness is president and CEO of McGinness Communication Solutions, Inc., a consulting and investigation firm. He also hosts The John McGinness Show on NewsRadio KFBK in Sacramento (AM 1530 and FM 93.1).”
